Willie Bobo, the great Latin percussionist. Born William Correa in 1934--Newyorican from Uptown, died in 1983. He wrote the jazz classic "Afro-Blue"--which is beautiful, but not even his best tune. Father of Eric Bobo, percussionist for the Beasties among others. Played smoking timbales, congas and bongos in a rare twisted way that suggested magic. My favorite is "Mazacote" from Spanish Grease. Made some of the smokingist amazing afro-percussive jams ever with Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria and Patato Valdes in the '60s. |
